I had a very dark (almost black) Buteo a few days ago in the trees at Grass Island in Guilford. From a distance in binoculars it looked like a dark Rough-legged to me. It finally took off and flew over East River marsh. It was the darkest Redtail I had ever seen! I have to admit, although it was a beautiful dark Redtail, I was hoping for a Rough-Legged!
Quoting peeplo at aol.com:

> Has anyone seen a dark Red-tailed Hawk along Route 15, between exit 63 and 65, in the North Haven to Wallingford stretch lately? I saw a dark raptor with two-toned wings out of the corner of my eye. My impression of shape and wing pattern looked more like a Red-tailed Hawk then a Rough-legged to me; I only had a quick glimpse so I can't rule out Rough-legged. I'm just curious to see what dark raptor, if any, has been seen in the area. Thanks.
