1/9/13 Milford, Connecticut Audubon Coastal Center 10AM-1PM, overcast,
43F, high tide receding. Viewed from windows facing marsh:
1 Northern harrier flushed the ducks over the marsh. American Black ducks,
mallards, a mixed group of about
18 Buffleheads and about 27 Red Breasted mergansers further out in marsh,
but the mergansers came in closer as the tide was receding. One Great
black backed gull sitting on osprey nest. As the tide receded 7 American
Wigeons, 12 Gadwalls, many Ring billed gulls. One Ring billed gull "fell
out of the sky"- a very ungraceful landing. No coasting onto the marsh, no
diving, just fell into the water, then came up with no food and then flew
off. (Probably embarassed about its performance.) Other birds seen
included mockingbirds, Cardinal, house sparrows, American crow, mourning
doves and Song sparrows.
