Interesting but i think it is still wiser to go with the opinion of people who work with this issue daily and with identification methods they use in the field and that have been derived from their field work.
And for the record, hybrids are not an insignificant part of the caudacutus / subvirgatus complex as the contact zone, the intergrade zone is growing with the increase of field work. Hybrids have been documented in Connecticut by these researchers i believe.
