The first osprey appeared @ the Mianus River Fishway in Greenwich this morning. The observation coincides with the arrival of the annual run of alewives - river herring this past week. DC cormorants and Common Mergansers were also present on Mianus Pond to take advantage of the new food source.
Anyone interested in seeing the 2013 Alewife Run and the Fishway in operation should plan to attend one of the two open houses scheduled in April. The first Open House is on 4/13/13 between 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM and the 2nd on 4/27/13 between 10:00 AM and noon.
For more info. contact Joe Cassone at the Greenwich Conservation Commission - 203-622-6461 or joseph.cassone at greenwichct.org.
The Mianus River Fishway is an e-Bird hotspot in CT. Sixty different species of birds have been seen at the Fishway since it became a hot spot.During the warmer months it is a great location to see tree swallows, cliff swallows, barn swallows and occassionally purple martins.
