And I'm only aware of rumors of interesting 16th English pronunciations of "Wheatear".

I'm English.  Birded all my life (from about 5 in southern  England).  
Never heard anything but field-fare (equal emphasis).   Never did think much of 
Funk & Wagnalls when obliged to use it in  NYC.
