[CT Birds] 3/30 Hammo - Bonaparte's Gull, Gannet, & White-rumped Sand

3/30 -- Madison, Hammonasset State Park, Meig's Point - 2 BONAPARTE'S GULLS flying westward over the Sound, a distant NORTHERN GANNET, a WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER on the rocks at the end of the Moraine Trail.

A nice morning at Hammonasset this morning.  Highlights were 2 BONAPARTE'S GULLS flying westward over the Sound, a distant NORTHERN GANNET, a WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER on the rocks at the end of the moraine trail, 9 Harbor Seals lounging on the rocks further out, and a Peregrine going after a Sanderling. There were some large flocks of shorebirds on the beach and at the end of the Moraine Trail and a variety of ducks in the river. eBird report below.

White-rumped Sandpiper  1     Photo taken of this medium sized shorebird with long wings extending past the tail.  White underparts with obvious black chevron marks running along the flanks.  The bird was feeding with Dunlin, Black-bellied Plover and one Ruddy Turnstone on the rocks at the end of the Moraine Trail.

Peregrine Falcon  1     The bird flew inland of the jetty and then back around to the beach putting up a flock of 30 or so Sanderlings.  It chased the birds and one Sanderling separated from the flock but the Peregrine did not catch it.  Definitely a NatGeo moment.
