Congratulations James, because it appears that your observation of 31
Whimbrel at Penfield Reef is an all-time high count of that species for
Connecticut. The previous high count seems to have been 23 birds seen at
the East River Marsh in Guilford on August 20, 1979. That is the highest
count mentioned by Zerankski and Baptist in their book "Connecticut Birds"
and it is also the high count listed on eBird for Connecticut. Patrick
Comins is listed as the observer for the Guilford record in eBird.

According to Zeranski and Baptist, dense flocks of Whimbrel "covering acres"
were reported in coastal Massachusetts during the early 1800's, but there
is no mention of similar large flocks in Connecticut during the 19th
century or any time thereafter.
