5/29 Milford, Connecticut Audubon Coastal Center 10AM-1PM, 62-70F,
overcast and rainy changing to sunny, low tide, rising .
The Osprey family has one chick which is being fed. At 10AM both male &
female were on the nest and female was feeding chick. At 10:15AM, a third
osprey flew past the nest with a fish in its talons. At 12:10, the male
osprey chased off a Great Egret which had been foraging near the nest.
Male & female left nest unattended for about 10 minutes; At
12:20, female returned to nest and male returned at 12:25 with a fish,
which the female was feeding to the chick.
Miley suggested that perhaps because the female is getting older, only one
of the eggs hatched. Previous years, she has laid 4 eggs and 3-4 have
hatched & fledged.
On the marsh were 5 Great egrets, 4 snow egrets, 6 D.C. Cormorants, 2 Mute
swans, 500+ mixed flock of Least & Semi palmated sandpipers with a few
Semipalmated plovers in the mix. On the grounds and feeders were Carolina
Wren, 3 House finches, (2M, 1 F) eating blossoms from a tree, 2 Song
sparrows, 1 Yellow warbler singing, Barn swallows, Tree swallows, 3
Goldfinches, Starlings, mourning doves, Cardinals, common Grackles, Red
winged blackbirds, & House sparrows. I observed 10 Purple martins at the
gourd condo, 1 male feeding something inside (perhaps the female or a baby).
