Whipps used to be regulars even in the New Haven Summer Bird Count Circle (eg., Hamden's Main Street near Lake Wintergreen).
Alas, no more.

Subject: Re: [CT Birds] Nightbird Survey
A few years back, we would hear at least 5 (or more) Whip-poor-wills calling out back behind my house in Killingworth on the private land/now water company land on any given summer night. In fact I had seen a few flying over our yard at dusk a few times, and my neighbor down the street would have a pair of them on their front porch railing and gravel driveway on many nights. I haven't heard a single Whip-poor-will in the last five years....or the many Great Horned, Barred and Screech Owls either. This is really sad.

I was hoping the extra bright and close full moon would change my luck and bring out more birds, but again, I only had 1 Whip-poor-will calling in the same spot as earlier this year. I used to have several survey points with multiple whips calling in the Southington/Wolcott area, but the last few years the number of encounters has dropped off significantly. Not a good trend.
