7/10 Milford, Connecticut Audubon Coastal Center 10-12:45PM, low tide
At 10AM the female osprey was on the nest with the juvenile. Male osprey
on his perch. 1 Stray osprey flying over throughout the morning. The
juvenile has the beautiful speckled feathering, with a very prominent gold
coloration on its nape. At 10:45 the male brought the rear half of a fish
which the juvenile proceeded to eat on its own! During the morning the
juvenile was either preening, walking around the nest & stretching or had
its beak open (because of heat). The female chased off a Great Blue heron
which flew over. At noon the male brought in another fish which it ate,
and gave some to the female.
Other birds on the marsh include: 4 Snowy Egrets, 4 Great egrets, 2
mallards (males), Least terns fishing, 1 Adult yellow crowned night heron,
5 D.C. Cormorants, 2 Mute swans.
Birds on the grounds include at least 19 Purple Martins flying around the
gourd condos and through the marsh, Cardinals, mourning doves, Robins,
Starlings galore (I counted at least 17 juveniles), tree swallows,
Mockingbird, 2 Goldfinches (M&F), Song sparrow bathing, Red winged
Common grackles (1 Grackle was on a mud flat, and had its head/bill
parallel to the mud apparently, sideways scooping up either bugs or crabs.
House wrens & a Carolina wren singing.
