Sandy Point Important Bird Area Clean-ups
There are two opportunities this fall to participate in a beach cleanup at Sandy Point IBA in West Haven. Both clean-ups will help prevent predators, attracted by trash, from visiting Sandy Point, one of the most important sites for piping plovers and other beach nesting bird species in the state of CT and a popular birding destination.
The Audubon Alliance for Coastal Waterbirds will host a beach cleanup on Sat. Aug. 17th, 2-5pm. Latex and leather work gloves will be provided. Park in the Sandy Point parking lot on Beach St. Contact: Corrie Folsom-O'Keefe, 203-233-0535 or cfolsom-okeefe at audubon.org, with questions.
The New Haven Bird Club will participate in the second beach cleanup on Sat. Sept. 21st, 9-12pm, as part of the Ocean Conservancy's "International Coastal Cleanup Day," captained locally by Save the Sound/Dr. Bob Marra. Please bring work gloves. Meet at the Savin Rock parking lot on Beach St. (immediately east of Chick's Restaurant/ 183 Beach St., next to the skate park). Contact: Craig Repasz, 203-230-1697 or crepasz at hotmail.com, with questions.
For both clean-ups, please bring sunscreen and water. Come for all or part of the time.
Thank you for your help!
