[CT Birds] 8/16 Cockenoe Island, Westport

Just wanted to report that the Cockenoe Island area of Westport was
completely devoid of terns yesterday afternoon. The colony is empty, not
surprising for the mid-Aug date, but there were zero migrant/staging terns
using the flats at low tide (nor were any fishing in the immediate area).
Fishermen continue to report low numbers of small bait fish immediately
around the Norwalk Islands in general, with much greater numbers mid-sound
and on the LI side of the sound. This probably accounts for the lack of
terns, which are usually abundant, successful breeding or not, during
mid-August. They are probably hanging out closer to a good food source.
Sounds like a similar scenario described around the mouth of the Housatonic.
