[CT Birds] CTBirds Digest, Vol 2427, Issue 2

pepc0142 pepc0142 at comcast.net
Fri Oct 18 11:40:01 EDT 2013

I'm new to birding outside my neighborhood & check in daily. I've learned a lot and look forward to learning more. This is the 1st time a lost has taken on a meaning that wsn't meant to be. I'm more shocked at the foolish banter that has continued through the past few days. Move on now! So many birds to track & we shouldn't prey on someones mistake.

Nancy.

I think the previous post was meant satirically and was not malicious in
intent.

I was speaking of intent, neither condemning or condoning, but thanks for
the insult.

A "joke" carries with it the same racist innuendo.  There is ABSOLUTELY NO means by which this can be construed as acceptable or permissible in any public, and for that matter private, forum.  At 9am in the morning, I'm already disgusted, disappointed and ashamed as a citizen.

See today's Washington Post article on slavery:  The United States, per capita, has a very low rate of slavery: just 0.02 percent, or one in every 5,000 people. But that adds up to a lot: an estimated 60,000 slaves, right here in America."  http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/worldviews/wp/2013/10/17/this-map-shows-where-the-worlds-30-million-slaves-live-there-are-60000-in-the-u-s/

I will state how I took it. I viewed it as a sarcastic slam against racists
who think blacks commit most crimes. Maybe I'm wrong, only the poster can
say. I also viewed it as a mistake to post. I also strongly believe if you
have an issue with a post you should contact the moderator directly, not
post to everyone. He has many years of experience handling these things and
has pretty darn good judgment. CTBirds is freer from public squabbles than
many forums and I believe most members would like to keep it that way.

If that is how you took it, then that is how you took it.  It seems a lot
of other people took it differently.  You seem to be unique in your support
of Paul.  (I know you said you are not condemning or condoning it, but you
are definitely supporting him.)  But I disagree about not posting the
feedback to everyone.  For those who interpreted the comment as racist
bigotry, expressing those feelings publicly will help to discourage others
from making similar comments.  Racism should not be hidden from public
view, it should be exposed and dealt with and talked about so that everyone
can learn from it.

I am asking that, as Dave suggested, comments about the recent post by Paul be directed to the list administrator (that's me) and/or the COA officers or board.? You can be sure everyone is aware of what has been said so far.

One reason I ask this is to get CTBirds back to the discussion of birds.

Just as important, Paul can not currently defend or explain himselfon the list because his posts are being held.

Thank you for your consideration.

In order to help continue to build the relationship between the birding community and State Parks, Audubon arranged for a volunteer day at Harkness Memorial State Park last week.  More than 60 volunteers from Dominion Energy, along with DEEP and Audubon Staff and Menunkatuck Audubon Society members, replaced two damaged Osprey Poles and performed other tasks around the park.  I posted a slideshow of the event, along with some bird photos from the day here:
