I normally do not like to post stories, but since Chris Elphic referenced a Denver Holt paper on the Snowy Owl irruption in MT the Winter of 2005-2006 - I was there. (Sometimes saw Denver around doing his studies.) The Snowy Owls would be spread in fields all day, usually perched on fence or farm equipment; they would hunt on occasion, but otherwise sit still. In evening there would be a movement of them to a smaller area to roost for the night.
