The Connecticut Christmas Bird Count gets underway tomorrow with the start of Count Week for the following CBC circles: Hartford, New Haven, Storrs, Woodbury-Roxbury. These four counts are being held on the earliest possible date within the National Audubon Society window for conducting Christmas Bird Counts – December 14 through January 5. The day after tomorrow, seven more Christmas Bird Counts enter Count Week: Greenwich-Stamford, Lakeville-Sharon, Litchfield Hills, Oxford, Quinnipiac Valley, Salmon River, and Westport. Seven additional counts will be held during the remainder of December or in early January. Count Week is defined as three days before and three days following the designated Count Day.

This is a great time to begin “staking out” birds in anticipation of the actual day of the count. If you have participated in previous years’ CBCs, you know that we’ve finally reached that special birding season again. If you’ve never before joined in on this long-running citizen science activity, now is your opportunity to find out what you’ve been missing. Use the list of all 18 Connecticut CBCs posted on this Connecticut Ornithological Association website (ctbirding.org) to choose one or more counts. Contact the count compiler, and get ready for the time of your birding life!
