In late December Groton Open Spaces (GOSA) concluded a deal with the Weber
family to acquire 298 acres of property surrounding the Avery Swamp. Avery
Swamp is a freshwater swamp surrounded by woods in Ledyard near the border
with Groton. It is on Lambtown Road north off of Rte 184 in Groton. During
the winter and early spring months part of the road next to the swamp is
closed to vehicular traffic. During the closure period it is a short walk
to the swamp if you approach from the north. From Rte 184, turn north on
Rte 117 and then right Lambtown Road Ext. The gate closing the road is on
the Extension just past where Lambtown Road splits off to the left. In the
springtime it is a dependable location for Wilson's snipe and wood ducks,
among other interesting birds.

The Weber family is gifting the Groton potion property to GOSA but the
Ledyard portion must be purchased. To see maps, find out more about the
Avery Swamp and Avery Farm, go to the GOSA website (gosaonline.org) or their
Facebook page. To help raise funds for this worthy project send a check
with AVERY FARM written on it to: Groton Open Spaces Association, Inc.,
P.O. Box 9187, Groton, CT 06340.
