Behind Windham Center School. Not so rare, but oh so close. I was
watching some small birds in the woods when the hawk rose up from the
ground out of nowhere, gorgeous rusty red breast and wings spread out; it
landed about 8 feet up on a large old tree. It had a rodent or small bird
in its talon, and proceeded to lazily tear it up and eat it. The sun shone
its winter beams straight across on the hawk's rich brown head and back,
and picked out its checkerboard wings and long, horizontally striped tail.
What a moment.
