After thawing out I checked this bird again and decided it was a Horned Grebe. Transitional plumage is difficult so I stuck to head and bill shape. Two other birders told me they thought they had an Eared Grebe so keep a look out. There was a Red - necked Grebe as well out with the gulls and a Lesser Yellowlegs in the Boulder pond. Ebird report when I thaw out again.
