4/2/14 Milford, Connecticut Audubon Coastal Center 10am-1PM, low tide
rising, overcast,
47F
At 10am, female osprey was on the nest. At 10:25, the male brought in
branches & mud, making 4 attempts to land before he did. This male appears
to be smaller and lighter brown on the back, than what I remember of last
year's male. At 11:00 the male osprey brought a fish to the female, which
she was eating.
11:15am-the male osprey took a full fledged bath in the marsh-he dropped
like a lead weight into the marsh & was submerged up to his head (dipping
his head in), wings flapping, then he flew up, and came back down
hard again into the marsh, up to his head, dipping and bathing. He then
flew to the perch-wings drooping & he was drenched! A Grackle flew by and
the male took off in pursuit (I didn't think he could fly , being so
drenched). The grackle wouldn't leave, and it, in turn, went in pursuit,
pecking at the osprey. But Grackle did finally leave the area. At
11:25-male was preening. 11:30-female was on the nest calling and eating
her fish.
At 12:10 &12:50PM, the ospreys copulated. The male continued bringing
branches & mud to the nest.
