>>Birds and Beans is great coffee (they are the Smithsonian coffee) but there are no retailers near me. A couple of health food stores that did carry it no longer do. You can order online but shipping can be pricey unless you order in quantity. That is why I wanted to set up a coffee buyer's club at HAS a couple of years ago. That did not work out since we didn't have volunteers to do it. This may change in the near future.
>>A few years back I put together a list of bird friendly coffees and where in CT they were available, for the HAS area. I will see if I can find it.
>>Trader Joe's carries a very reasonably priced shade grown organic fair trade coffee: Ethiopian from the Yrgachieffe region. It is quite good with a lemony finish. You have to be careful with labelling. Not all organic is shade grown and there is some debate about whether this matters environmentally. There have been studies that show that birds will use sun-grown coffee plantations for habitat and that it is the chemicals that are the real problem. I am not an expert, but I have been to Costa Rica and have seen what they put on the beans. You would never drink non-organic coffee after seeing this.
