State Legislature Passes Senate Bill 29 to Secure Funding for “The Preserve”
Last night [Tuesday], State Representative Phil Miller reported on his Facebook page “that both the Senate and the House passed Senate Bill 29, which secures the State and Federal funding towards the purchase of the 1000 acre Preserve.” We wish to thank State Representatives Phil Miller and Marilyn Giuliano, State Senators Art Linares and Andrea Stillman, and others, for their support of the bill. The next step in the process will be the Governor’s signature on the bill and action by the Bonding Commission at the end of May.
Old Saybrook Board of Finance Will Hold a Public Hearing on “The Preserve” at its Meeting on Tuesday, May 20th
Last evening [Tuesday], the Board of Finance (BoF) discussed many matters regarding the possible purchase and ownership of The Preserve. On hand were Kate Brown and Alicia Sullivan of The Trust for Public Land, as well as Graham Stevens of the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection. Fred Carstensen, Director of the Connecticut Center for Economic Analysis at UCONN, discussed the economic impacts of preserving the 1,000 acre tract of land. Additionally, former first selectwoman Barbara Maynard, and former selectman, Bill Peace, provided input during the public comment period. The Board of Finance determined it will hold a public hearing on Tuesday, May 20th at 7pm regarding moving a $3 million bond authorization (towards purchase of The Preserve) to a public referendum. Hike the 1,000 Acre Forest this Saturday, May 10th
We will lead two guided hikes, one at 10am, and the second at Noon, leaving from the M& J bus lot (130 Ingham Hill Road across from Pasta Vita in Old Saybrook). A shuttle bus will take us to the top and end of Ingham Hill Road where the entrance to the forest is located. The heavy rain date will be Sunday, May 11th. At 9am on Saturday, May 10th, the Garden Club will be presenting a $5,000 check to The Trust for Public Land to assist with the purchase of the 1,000 acre forest.! Thank You! Stop by our "Preserve the Preserve” booth at the May market from 9am to 2pm on Main Street in Old Saybrook.
