This morning on the rails-to-trails between rte 20 in East Granby + north just into Suffield. What was nice about the birding? Frickin everything.

51 species spotted (10 warblers, including Canada, Blackburnian + Ovenbird). The Pretty Boys were out in force: Scarlet Tanager, Rose Breasted Grosbeak, Indigo Bunting, BT Green Warbler, Baltimore Oriole + Yellow Throated Vireo all seemed to be posing in the sunlight. A vast number of Wood Thrush were singing, and putting in regular appearances. Other species sighted included Peewee, Yellow Bellied Sapsucker, Broadwing Hawk and Kingbird. Did not see him, but got a lot of calls from a Barred Owl. Even the non-birds were looking good - dozens of painted turtles sunning themselves, and a Malamut that looked large enough to be serving House Stark.

I talked briefly with a non-birder woman who was out for a walk, and paused to gaze up at a bird in a tree. "They look so beautiful this morning!" she said. The "they" in question were Red-Winged Blackbirds.

She was not wrong.

After the flood all the colors came out,
Jonah Cohen
