6/25 Milford, Connecticut Audubon Coastal Center, 9-12noon. Overcast,
High tiding rising.
At 9AM the male was on the nest, with chicks, female returned a few minutes
later. 3 chicks are getting large with russet on the backs of their necks.
They were preening and sleeping much of the morning. The female chased off
a D.C. Cormorant which was fishing in the marsh near the nest. First it
dove, and the Osprey dove after it. It resurfaced a distance away and then
took off. I guess he was uninvited company. Also on the marsh was an adult
YELLOW CROWNED NIGHT NERON, stalking & eating. It grabbed a crab, and one
of the crab's claws grabbed the Heron's lower bill, but the heron whacked
it a few times and it let go, and then got swallowed-big lump in heron's
neck as it went down.
Also- MUTE SWANS, 2 MALLARDS, 1 SPOTTED SANDPIPER-foraging and scurrying
along the marsh edge, 6 D.C. Cormorants , far out, and 2 other OSPREYS far
out, as well as 2 GREAT EGRETS.
On grounds- BARN SWALLOWS, TREE SWALLOWS, COMMON GRACKLES, MOURNING DOVES,
STARLINGS, 4 CARDINALS (family), American robins.
