In DEEP's Connecticut Wildlife May/June issue, with a wonderful photo cover by Paul Fasco of a singing Wood Thrush, there's an article regarding state parks. "By October 1942, the army had occupied Hammonasset for aerial assault and bombing practice, closing the beach to public use for the entire 1943 and 1944 seasons." 
See things are getting better.
