8/20 Milford, Connecticut Audubon Coastal Center 10-1PM, high tide ,
receding 73F, partly cloudy/sunny.
No ospreys until 11:30AM. Then the male adult osprey landed on the perch ,
calling and stayed there. No juveniles or female seen today.
On the marsh were a mixed flock of 100+ SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS, LEAST
SANDPIPERS & SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, 3 GREAT EGRETS, 3 SNOWY EGRETS, 2 D.C.
CORMORANTS, 6 MUTE SWANS, 1 GREAT BLUE HERON, & 4 JUVENILE YELLOW CROWNED
NIGHT HERONS.
THE YELLOW CROWNED NIGHT HERON JUVENILES were flying around, landing,
eating and then flying around some more. When one flew off, the others
followed.
On the grounds: MOURNING DOVES, CAROLINA WREN, CATBIRDS, CARDINALS, A BARN
SWALLOW, MOCKINGBIRD and a large group of 500+ gulls far out on west end of
marsh, apparently feeding.
the ospreys at the Old Tavern Rd nest (Orange) have fledged. Today one
juvenile flew in with a fish and was eating it on the post. The female
adult osprey was sitting in a tree.
A hawk flushed 2 Killdeer. the hawk was heavily marked- brown above, on
its back, and head, a buffy eyebrow stripe, a yellow lore, very feathered
buffy & rust colored legs (like wearing pants),its upper breast was a buffy
cream color with heavy tear drop streaking on its lower chest and belly.
When in flight it appeared to have red/rust on its secondary
feathers(mid-wing). Rather large size. I couldn't find any match in
Sibley's.
