9/17 Milford, Connecticut Audubon Coastal Center 10AM-1pm, 65-70f, mid
tide receding.
A visitor reported seeing one osprey soaring, but otherwise none were seen
on the nest, platform or on the marsh. I wish them "bon voyage" on their
migration to warmer climes.
On the marsh:
9 SNOWY EGRETS, 4 GREAT EGRETS, 1 GREAT BLUE HERON, 2 JUVENILE YELLOW
CROWNED NIGHT HERONS (one sunning itself in the marsh grasses, in a yoga
pose with wings outstretched), 1 GREATER YELLOW LEGS and 1 LESSER
YELLOWLEGS, walking next to each other. Very easy to see the difference in
size and species when they were so close to each other; MUTE SWANS, RING
BILLED & HERRING GULLS, 1 BLACK BELLIED PLOVER & 1 WILLET fly by, 50+
"peeps"/shorebirds flying through the marsh, 3 D.C. CORMORANTS. On grounds:
MOURNING DOVES, CARDINALS, CAROLINA WRENS, SONG SPARROWS, 1 RUBY THROATED
HUMMINGBIRD flying by, 1 flycatcher type -gray back, nape & head and
wings, with no wing bars but wings had white scalloping on edges and
forked tail. It just flitted around a lot, sat for a few seconds and then
left.
Many visitors on premises today from Arizona, New Jersey, Long island- all
remarking how they loved the coastal center, its exhibits and obviously our
avifauna.
