9/21/14, in Lyme, at Whalebone Creek and Hadlyme Cove: Five SORA rails. The
marsh in this cove is a beautiful one, dominated by large stands of Wild
Rice. It is unusual as it is a fresh water/tidal marsh. The birds were seen
and heard by kayak. We saw two well and heard at least three more. Other
than getting drenched in a sudden downpour, it was a very pleasant paddle.
Other notable sightings were: at least 600 Red-winged Blackbirds roosting in
the grasses, Wood Duck, Spotted Sandpiper, and Belted Kingfisher. Full
report on ebird.
