9/29/14, in West Haven at Sandy Point: a large flock of gulls, terns, and
cormorants feeding on a large school of fish (bunker/menhaden?) just off
shore. There were at least 300 gulls, 250 cormorants, and 100 terns.
Notable species included one Bonaparte's Gull (first winter bird, with black
tail tip, narrow M-shaped pattern on wings, and black ear patch), a Common
Loon, and at least 2 Forster's Terns. It was quite the spectacle. The
local fishermen were getting in on the action, with as many as a dozen
putting their lines in the water there.
