In the late 1970s, the New Haven Bird Club used to have an occasional hawk watch up on West Rock.

Birding West Rock today had two Golden Eagles, at least a half doz Bald Eagles and 3 Sandhill Cranes. The Sandhill Cranes were toward the north end of the park road heading due west.
