Jeremy Nance and I birded Aspetuck Reservoir this morning at the fountain
(now off) (on Route 58 about a mile north of Route 136/Westport Road). We
got great looks at a male WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL in a pine just south of
the parking pull-out. It was associating loosely with a mixed finch flock
containing AMERICAN GOLDFINCHES and one PINE SISKIN. A nice waterfowl
flock, which congregated on a little remaining open patch in the reservoir,
contained one female REDHEAD and a single female LESSER SCAUP mixed in with
numerous RING-NECKED DUCKS and other regular ducks. A BLACK VULTURE
cruised over the reservoir.
