1/1/15, in Westbrook, along the Patchogue River, observed behind the town
hall: one very out-of-season, SPOTTED SANDPIPER.  Seen this morning.  It
flew from south side to north side of river, with bowed wings and short
stiff wingbeats.  It landed on the muddy edge of the north side of the river
and began bobbing immediately. All field marks noted, including the brown
"spur" on the side of the chest, plain brown back, white belly, white
supercilium, dark eyeline and light lower mandible.  It stayed in the one
spot on the north side the river for the remainder of our stay at this
