Marsh Birds and Marsh Restoration

Steve Broker, noted Connecticut biologist and birder, first canoed the Herring River in Wellfleet, Massachusetts in the early 1960s. Over the course of the ensuing half-century, Steve has focused increasingly on the bird populations of the Herring River. During some 50 canoe trips on the river in 2013, Steve confirmed the breeding of Clapper Rail, Virginia Rail, Marsh Wren, and Saltmarsh Sparrow; and investigated multiple sightings of Least Bittern as a probable breeder. He also found that Soras use the Herring River during the fall migration. Steve discusses the breeding biology of marsh birds and describes the current restoration ecology efforts to restore full tidal flow to this estuary.

Free and open to the public.
