At Hopeville Pond State Park today there were seventeen common mergansers with one male and one female hooded mergansers sharing a narrow break in the icy pond over 100 yards in length. Two common ravens were flying low and causing a ruckus the entire time which is a welcome break from the ordinary time counting though it wouldn't facilitate a more thorough survey given the conditions on the ground. I followed one raven to find quite a large nest inside the area where the loftiest pines grow.
