5/3/15; in Guilford/Madison, at the East River Marsh: a pair of BOAT-TAILED
GRACKLES seen at the boat launch parking area. The male spent some time
calling from the top of the phragmites west of the lot. It also fed on the
ground around the edge of the lot. The female spent time feeding in the
marsh. They appeared to be on territory and may nest here. To the best of
my knowledge, this is a new location for this species, continuing the trend
of its range expansion along the CT coast in recent years. Other notable
observations on a two-hour paddle on the river included: two Yellow-crowned
Night-heron, many Willet, a few Spotted Sandpiper, Greater and Lesser
Yellowlegs, Purple Martin, Red-throated Loon, and Marsh Wren. Full report
on ebird.
