[CT Birds] Wood Duck behavior

This morning while at Riverside Park in Hartford I observed a hen Wood Duck with a brood of about 15 ducklings. Suddenly she attacked one of the ducklings biting it to the point I thought she was going to kill it. Eventually the duckling swam away from all the others to the far side of the pond and started feeding by itself. Seems cruel to us humans but I can only assume it was not the offspring of this particular Wood Duck.
