Tammy is correct, it's a common late summer molting pattern, especially in the birds you mention.

Hi Tammy,
 I read the All About Birds article and nowhere does it describe a pattern of the bald head that I could find. I've had apparently the same Male Cardinal with the bald head for over a month. That is not a molt. I've seen this before. The rest of his plumage is bright and beautiful. I believe there is another process at work here.
