At least the American Golden Plover and Buff Breasted Sandpipers are still around for us to enjoy. They were nearly wiped out by the thoughtless gunners of the l9th and early part of the 20th century. Of course we will never see an Eskimo Curlew since the gunners wiped them out before protective laws were enacted.
