Decent flight today at Lighthouse Point Park in New Haven, despite winds that were primarily west with a very minimal WNW component for at most 2 of the 8.5 hrs covered. A beautiful sky made for excellent viewing conditions that produced 173 raptors -54 Am Kestrels, 44 Ospreys, 33 Merlins, 31 Sharp-shinned Hawks, 4 Peregrine Falcons, 3 N Harriers, 1 Cooper's Hawk and 1 Broad-winged Hawk. As is often the case at Lighthouse many of these birds were enjoyed at fairly close range.
Of special interest were 125 Ruby-throated Hummingbirds, with the high count helped by a large contingent of watchers and the presence of my red car (the number of hummers passing close to it didn't seem like a coincidence). Also a juv Lesser-black-backed Gull was spotted by Nick Bonomo in the air and on the move, and there was one calling Dickcissel and one Purple Finch. Regular migrants for the date in good numbers included 65 Chimney Swifts, 180 Tree Swallows, 480 Cedar Waxwings and 70 Bobolinks.
