10/7 Milford, Connecticut Audubon Coastal Center 9:30am-1:00pm, sunny,
65F-72F,
mid-tide, receding.
Very birdy here today. At 9:30am one osprey was on the perch, eating a
flapping fish.
On the Long Island Sound there was a gull feeding frenzy , east of the
platform-must have been about 500+ gulls, about 150 "peeps" along one sand
bar, but too far out to identify,
1 Great Black backed gull.
On grounds off private road- 2 Towhees (male & female calling), 5 White
throated sparrows, song sparrows, 2 Chipping sparrows, 6 Yellow rumped
warblers, 2 Mockingbirds, 1 Catbird, 3 Goldfinches, 2 House finches, Blue
jays, Cardinals, mourning doves, 1 Common Yellowthroat skulking in bushes,
5 American crows raising a ruckus in the tree tops, 2 Vireos (bill, eyes
and size were vireo- pale yellow breast , grayish olive back with stripe
across eye) but not sure what kind-and numerous dragonflies. One visitor
reported seeing "a bunch of Meadowlarks".
On Marsh: 1 American black duck, 12 Great egrets, 8 Snowy egrets, 2
Yellowlegs, 1 Northern harrier cruising by, 4 Yellow crowned night
herons-juveniles, many D.C. Cormorants. Gulls (Ring billed & herring)
collecting as the tide went out.
Beautiful views from all levels on the tower.
