I visited Lake Waramaug in New Preston today with Bill Banks. This scenic lake in recent years has attracted 4-figure counts of Common Mergansers, and today there were 3000 to 4000. They were spread all over the lake in dense flocks, making an actual count difficult. Also present were 4 Redheads discovered yesterday by Buzz Devine, along with 110 Ring-necked Ducks, 60 Hooded Mergansers and 24 Ruddy Ducks along with 280 Mallards and smaller numbers of other species. Buzz also had Long-tailed Duck and Red-breasted Merganser, species more commonly seen on saltwater. He also had a Pied-billed Grebe.
