I spent more than an hour just after dawn walking around the James White Farm Preserve adjacent to the fairgrounds in Durham. Very productive. Most noteworthy were an American Kestrel, 4 Savannah Sparrows, 3 Field Sparrows and 4 Fox Sparrows, one of which sang its beautiful finch-like song. Also present were a Northern Harrier, a few Red-winged Blackbirds and Brown-headed Cowbirds and a pheasant flushed by a German Short-haired Pointer. There's definitely a lot of dog walking/running, but the area is so extensive that this has no real effect on the birds. If you're nervous about dogs though, you might not be happy. One couple had a pack of at least five, all off leash and rambunctious.
