2/4  CT River, Turner's Falls, MA - A number of us CT birders joined the crowd of MA birders to see the MEGA (apparent) YELLOW-LEGGED GULL late afternoon on 4 Feb.  This rare gull flew in and joined the gull flock on the ice at about 4:45pm. This bird was discovered 1 Feb by local expert James P. Smith, who shared his excellent photos with gull experts, and who pretty much arrived at this identification. If accepted by the MA bird committee, this would be a first state record.

Here is my eBird checklist, with photos:   http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S27302832

For those planning to go, the YLGU has appeared on the river late day (3:30-4:45pm) daily since its discovery.  The best site to view from is Unity Park and vicinity. This species is native to the Mediterranean coast and the Azores. Outside of Newfoundland, there are only a handful of records for eastern North America.
A great eatery nearby is the Black Cow Burger & Bar.
