6pm-6:15pm at dusk had quite a few Woodcocks doing their flight displays and PEENT calls from the ground. This was my first experience with this bizarre spring arrival and display. My friend and mentor, AJ Hand, gave me the tour of this phenomenon at the Audubon Tree Farm in Greens Farm. He brought his powerful flashlight to better see them and possibly get a better look at one.
I saw three and heard many more. Very disorientating when they are up in the dark sky whistling and making chirping sounds that seem to come from every angle! They fly like someone misthrew a small football. Very flappy and unstable flight-kinda entertaining, actually. I've never experienced anything like it.
Was told they don't mind the flashlight. Any advice or protocol with the approach when trying to see them low light?
