Seventeen Connecticut Christmas Bird Counts have submitted their 2015-2016 results to National Audubon Society. The five Northern CBCs are Barkhamsted, Edwin Way Teale - Trail Wood, Hartford, Litchfield Hills, and Storrs. The four Mid-State CBCs are Oxford, Pawling/Hidden Valley, Quinnipiac Valley, and Woodbury-Roxbury. The eight Coastal CBCs are Greenwich-Stamford, Guilford-Long Island Sound (new this year!), Napatree, New Haven, New London, Old Lyme-Saybrook, Stratford-Milford, and Westport.

Results for each count circle have been entered into a Statewide spreadsheet, and I am working on a preliminary summary of the various trends for some 172 species observed during the 2015-2016 Christmas Bird Count season. This was a remarkable year for western vagrants and other rarities. As is always the case, some species or larger taxonomic groups of birds were observed in high numbers, some in low numbers, some maintaining count levels fairly steadily from year to year. Many species counted in significantly increasing numbers over the past 20-30 years continue their upward trends, while a few other species continue their downward projections in numbers.

Stay tuned with ctbirds for some general observations. The Statewide review article will appear in the July 2016 issue of The Connecticut Warbler.
