Brian Toal had reported hearing a Yellow-billed Cuckoo at Station 43 in South Windsor a few days ago. It was an unusually early report, and Paul Desjardins went to investigate. Paul suggested it might be a Pied-bill Grebe calling, as he saw one in the pond. After listening to several different tapes, Brian heard a recording of the pb grebe that matched what he heard.

I am not familiar with pb grebe calls myself, and was surprised how parts of their calls do resemble a cuckoo. A good lesson in learning calls and also a reminder to try to visually verify a bird if heard out of its normal season.

Thanks to Paul Desjardins for his expert help.
