5/17/16 -- East Rock Park, New Haven/Hamden -- from many observers -- a day of many highlights. Mixed songbird flocks including multiples of some species were found in several areas of the park, including Trowbridge Drive, the Mill River path, and the road to the summit (Farnam Drive) above Trowbridge. Notable were the numbers of Swainson's thrushes and the following warbler species: magnolia, Blackburnian, Canada and Wilson's. Single Tennessee, bay-breasted and hooded warblers were observed. A solitary sandpiper was seen along the Mill River. A brown thrasher was found in the old archery field. Two yellow-billed cuckoos were heard in woods adjacent to the archery field. A gray-cheeked thrush sp. (dull plumage, silent) was found on the trail between East Rock Road and Orange Street, on the east side of the Mill River. A yellow-throated vireo was heard on the Giant Steps. A Lincoln's sparrow was seen on the Mill River path. The summer tanager was heard in its previously reported location at 7:00 a. m. but not observed after that.
