7/6 Milford, Connecticut Audubon Coastal Center, 9:45am-1PM, sunny,
85-90F, low tide rising.
The Purple Martin condos were very active & vocal this morning; i counted
about 31 birds flying in and around . Several females were bringing in
bugs to the gourds, and one female was removing a fecal sac. The gourd
with the camera in it, hatched 5 chicks, all with beaks open waiting for
the next meal.
Our ospreys are doing well. I didn't see any fish being delivered today,
but the male and female were attending to the chick and on their post and
nest positions.
On the marsh: 4 Snowy egrets, 7 Great egrets, 2 Yellow crowned night
herons, 14 Mute swans,4 mallards (2 male & 2 female),
1 D.C. cormorant, 1 Least tern fishing.
On the grounds: Many Robins with at least 10 juveniles, common Grackles,
Cowbird, 1 Song sparrow, 1 Carolina wren, 1 House wren, 1 male young
Orchard Oriole, 1 Mockingbird, Starlings, Mourning doves, 2 Cardinals.
The American Basswood trees in front of the center were teeming with Bumble
Bees, Honey bees and other insects.
