7/13 Milford, Connecticut Audubon Coastal Center 9:40-1PM, sunny, 80-85 F,
mid tide receding.
Lots of activity this morning-campers, visitors & Channel 8 & channel 12
news, and New Haven REgister covered the DEEP banding of the Purple Martin
chicks in the colony. Apparently there were 93 chicks banded, and around
30 adults flying around. Coverage should be on news tonight.
There will be a binder in the center about the aging, sexing etc of Purple
At 10am, the female osprey was on the nest with the chick. Chick is
getting quite large and starting to exercise its wings. Male was on perch;
then male took off and returned around
10:25 brought in a fish. He ate the fish for about 30 minutes, then
deposted the fish in the nest. Female was feeding and feeding the chick as
well. Around 12:50pm, female was feeding chick again.
on marsh: 5 Great Egrets, 3 Canada Geese, 2 Herring gulls, 8 Mute swans, 1
Yellow crowned Night heron, 4 D.C. Cormorants, 2 Least terns, 3 Mallards.
On grounds: Mourning doves, Starlings (flock of about 50 flew over marsh),
2 Cardinals. 2 red winged blackbirds, Common Grackles, 2 Song sparrows,
many Robins with about 4 juveniles, 2 Catbirds, 5 Orchard orioles (1 adult
male, 1 young male, 1 adult female followed by 2 juveniles which were
flapping their wings to get fed.
