This week the blackbirds, mostly red-winged and common grackles, continue to be the dominant species of number in and about Pachaug State Forest.  They have the woods, brooks, marshes, and fields to their works not to mention the ponds.  This is a later summer season as opposed to an early season when the majority has flown by the end of June.  Friday evening at the Heron Marsh (Griswold, Rts.201+138) one flock of between 100-150 flew at sunset to the center of the marsh making less sound than wind though the cattails.
There is a state parks sign at the Heron Marsh this year although the herons have largely been absent so far.  One or two adult GBH were in the marsh circling above on Wednesday evening.
