8/27/16 at Sandy Point in West Haven. We went at high tide and walked out
along the beach to the end of Morse Point. There were many terns and
Laughing Gulls feeding in the bay and roosting on the open sandbars. A
Black Tern flew in and landed on one of the sand bars to roost and preen.
Then, a trio of Willets came in and landed in front of us at the point. One
was 10-15% larger than the other two, with longer legs, a longer bill, and
paler overall. It was an excellent example of Western vs Eastern Willet. We
then observed the Buff-breasted Sandpiper on the sandy beach on the north
side of the point. It flew to one of the exposed mud bars (where the
Black-bellied Plover were roosting), but didn't stay long, flying towards
the lagoon and out of sight. Full report on ebird.
